Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council plans Adelaide’s biggest rates rise

Erin Jones, City Editor for The Advertiser and Sunday Mail, wrote a piece titled Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council plans Adelaide’s biggest rates rise on 19th May 2025.

In the article she wrote:

An eastern suburbs council is proposing a 9.49 per cent rate rise as it combats higher than normal building costs and finishes construction of a $60m swimming pool.
Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council has proposed the highest residential rate increase of any metropolitan council, on the back of a 7 per cent rate increase the previous financial year.

SPRA is urging residents to compare this with the neighbouring council of Campbelltown:

Onkaparinga and Campbelltown councils have proposed the lowest residential rate rise of 2.49 per cent and 2.5 per cent, respectively.

The concerns of Norwood Residents Association acting chair Mackie Eaton are echoed by SPRA:

Mr Eaton said he looked forward to a report by the Electoral Services Commission of SA which analyses the council’s finances and provides independent risk-based advice on investment decisions and long-term financial plans.

SPRA suggest that residents should be concerned about debt levels reaching $106m; double annual rate revenue. We recommend that residents read the article, SPRA's response to the budget and respond to the consultation by turning up on Monday night.
