Social planning expert Wendy Sarkissian to speak on State Government's 30-Year Plan at Hawke Institute forum

Emma Altschwager reports on her discussion about Resistance to high-density housing in city-fringe suburbs being a natural and warranted response with Wendy Sarkissian in the Eastern Courier.

Resident objection to plans for multi-storey apartments along main roads in city-fringe suburbs was not simply a NIMBY - not in my backyard - response, she said.

"It's about how different it (new development) is and how unhome-like it is," Dr Sarkissian said.

Dr Sarkissian suggested councils were struggling to implement the 30-Year Plan because it came with "no real support".

"It was rushed and ill-considered and it's been a terrible burden for local government to implement and meet their targets," she said.

SPRA will be sending a representative to listen to the forum. Please read The vexed triangle: heritage, urban density, and community for a response from SPRA.
