About Time 2013: South Australia's History Festival

About Time 2013, organised by History SA and which will run from the 1st to 31st May, is one of South Australia’s largest community events. The festival promotes the State’s wonderful collections, places and stories through an amazing range of history-related activities. About Time began in 2004 as SA History Week and has grown each year, becoming a month-long festival in 2011. Its popularity and success is due to the hard work and enthusiasm of the event organisers, including thousands of volunteers, who are passionate about sharing our history.

This year there are many events in the Norwood, Payneham & St Peters area, which residents may be interested in attending. These events include guided walks, bus tours, talks and exhibitions. The details of these local events are listed below.

EXHIBITION Clay Lineage - the London Pottery to the Jam Factory
This beautiful history exhibition celebrates the fine tradition of brickmakers and potters in the City of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters from Johann Koster to the celebrated master William Holford who taught his craft to his son, Thomas Holford, who established the London Pottery in Maylands.
The power and the passion of pottery reigns supreme. The exhibition has been put together by Kerry Reid, Denise Schumann and Viesturs Cielens with items on loan from the Yates family, the Cielens family, Kingsley Turner and items from the City of NPSP’s Civic Collection.
Throughout May, opening hours Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm ( not open Wed or Sunday)

MID WEEK WALK TOURS

NORWOOD WALK
Walking Tour 1st May “Old Norwood: A Bygone Era” led by historian Denise Schumann

This historical stroll will take you through the backstreets of old Norwood past pise cottages, grand residences with hidden stories, to the old police station and courthouse. Visit St Bartholomew’s Church designed by famous colonial architect Charles Hargrave and see where the young Hans Heysen worked before he rushed to art classes at the Norwood Town Hall. (2 hour walk)

NORWOOD FOOTY TOURS
Walking Tour 8th May “Red & Blue Legends - Norwood Oval” led by Roger Woodcock
Come and have a look around the historic Norwood Oval, established in 1900 and home to one of
South Australia’s oldest footy clubs. Hear from the ‘Men of Norwood’ the old favourites like Roger Woodcock & Mike Coligan. Visit the inner sanctum hear about the battles below the ground. The tour finishes in the Premiers Room where you can have a coffee and mingle with the past (2 hour walk)

RIVER TORRENS WALK
Walking Tour 8th May “The River Torrens Past & Present” led by environmentalist Kingsley Turner & local historian Denise Schumann
This fascinating and delightful walk along the River Torrens explores the impact of European settlement through brick-making to flour milling and the culling of the ancient Red Gums. Come and hear how land speculators diverted Second Creek and changed the Torrens forever but it stilled weaved a magical power all of its own - sometimes tragically – here the tales of the river. Walking Tour 15th May “College Park – A Little bit of Old Adelaide” led by Uniting Church historian, Jim Everett
This walk looks at the early history of College Town one of Adelaide’s most prestigious suburbs and how this area rivalled its eastern neighbours as a bastion of wealth, commercial power and political influence in Adelaide. Discover the home of famous German Jeweller, Johann Steiner and see where Catherine Helen Spence and South Australia’s first Premier BT Finniss lived. (2 hour walk)

Walking Tour 15th May “All Along the Avenues of St Peters” led by former St Peter’s Cr David Cree & historian Denise Schumann
This tour will take participants for a stroll around one of Adelaide’s most historic leafy suburbs. Rich in architectural history and stories there is no place quite like the Avenues. Developed as a speculative land venture in the 1870s history proves that nothing changes. Come and see ‘Baroona’ as featured on “Whose Been Sleeping in My House” (2 hour walk)

PAYNEHAM CEMETERY BUS TOUR
Bus Tour 3 May “The Dead Heart Tour of Payneham Cemetery” led by Jim Everett.
This bus tour will visit St Matthew’s Church and the Kensington Churchyard burial site on the way to the historic Payneham Cemetery. Visitors will walk past the graves of the rich and famous and the poor and the unknown see where the famous potters William & Thomas Holford are buried along with Kate Cocks, explorer Heath Nash, sports legends Topsy Waldron and John Creswell, motor legend HenryJ Holden founder of GMH along with the significant World War 1 memorials dedicated to Military Cross winner Lieut James Robin AIF and Anzac Day casualty Pte L Dillon and founder of the ALP Hon W Storey et al.

ARCHITECTURE BUS TOUR
Bus Tour 22nd May “Architecture By Design:Towers, Turrets & Spires”led by architectural historian, Lesley Abell.
This tour will look at examples of nineteenth century architecture and modern architecture with the goal of understanding what historical forces shape and mould a city’s built heritage and its new architectural forms in an old suburb. (2 hours)

TALKING HISTORY SEMINARS – Register interest

Talking Sport “1878 - The Story of the Norwood Football Club’s First Year”
Sports historian Bernard Whimpress and former player Michael Coligan will present an entertaining talk based on their new book about the first year of the Norwood Football Club its trials and tribulations. This engaging conversation will be moderated by former ABC sports guru Roger Wills.

Talking Gardens - “The Diplomatic Gardner – The Story of Dr Richard Schomburgk”
This wonderful talk by Dr Pauline Payne will peel back the layers of history to give the audience an insight into the life of one of South Australia’s most influential German colonists Dr Richard Schomburgk. A cultivated and learned man, he was much admired for his ideas on natural science and his botanical knowledge which shaped the Adelaide’s landscape forever.

Talking Local History
“Stepney Turn Back Time”- The German Legacy
Local historian Denise Schumann will delight audiences with her armchair history tour through the town of Stepney. Laid out in 1848 by Georg Muller and other German émigrés the Stepney Triangle was home to many German speaking colonists including the remarkable Hans Heysen who attended the well known German educator, Matilda Piper’s private school in Henry Street. Learn of the remarkable Hakan Linde and his prize Phoenix Distillery and what was Carl Linger’s association, and the jeweller Johann Wendt, with the area.

St Peter's College Chapel - a hidden gem
Join a guided tour of the Chapel, a hidden gem. Visitors will hear the history of the Chapel and will have the chance to view the beautiful stained-glass windows, kneelers, vestments and sacred vessels. 130 years young - open day at Spicer Uniting Church
Tours of Spicer Uniting Church to mark 130 years of worship in the St Peters area. See the heritage buildings, stained glass windows, glorious wood throughout and pipe organ. Small group guided tours through the buildings will also show the sensitive recent renovations by award winning heritage architects. Afternoon tea is also available.
